What it is

What It Does

OpenText is a large Canadian enterprise information management company, not a legal-specific vendor. Its relevance to legal teams sits in a few product lines: eDiscovery and legal hold (the Axcelerate and EnCase forensic lines, the latter from its Guidance Software acquisition), enterprise content and document management, and information governance and records retention. Legal departments and litigation-support teams use it for processing and reviewing large volumes of electronic evidence, managing matter documents, and meeting retention obligations — usually as part of a wider corporate IT estate rather than a standalone legal purchase.

Because OpenText sells across every major industry, a legal buyer is evaluating a corner of a much larger catalogue. The eDiscovery and forensic tools compete with Relativity, Nuix, and similar platforms; the content management side competes with Microsoft, OpenText’s own legacy Documentum line, and others.

What We Found

OpenText was founded in 1991 as a spin-off from a University of Waterloo project to index the Oxford English Dictionary, and is headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario. It is publicly traded (NASDAQ/TSX: OTEX) and one of Canada’s largest software companies, with more than 10,000 employees. It has grown largely through acquisition, including Guidance Software (EnCase forensics) and Micro Focus.

We haven’t found legal-practitioner review volume specific to the eDiscovery line in community channels — most public discussion concerns the broader enterprise content management products.

What We Haven’t Verified

  • Pricing — enterprise sales model, no published figures
  • Adoption rates within legal teams specifically (vs. wider enterprise IT use)
  • Feature claims and workflow mappings — based on vendor and third-party listings, not hands-on testing
