What It Does
FTK (Forensic Toolkit) is a digital forensics product for full-disk imaging, evidence processing, and artifact analysis. It is used for computer forensic investigations in law enforcement, corporate security, and eDiscovery, where it ingests and indexes data upfront so investigators can search across collected evidence. The toolkit includes a standalone disk-imaging utility (FTK Imager) and an enterprise investigation platform (FTK Central).
FTK was originally developed by AccessData, the company founded in 1987 whose old domain (accessdata.com) the crawl recorded. AccessData was acquired by Exterro, which now owns and develops FTK as part of its digital-forensics line. The product sits in the eDiscovery and forensic-investigation workflow rather than in practice management or contract work.
