What it is

LexisNexis is a division of RELX (formerly Reed Elsevier) and one of the two dominant legal research platforms globally, alongside Thomson Reuters’ Westlaw. The LexisNexis brand is used for legal products; the parent RELX also operates in scientific publishing (Elsevier), risk analytics, and exhibitions, but in legal technology “LexisNexis” is the commonly known brand.

Market position

LexisNexis and Westlaw (Thomson Reuters) form a near-duopoly in legal research. Both have invested heavily in AI, with LexisNexis partnering with Harvey AI for its generative AI capabilities. The “Big Two” are increasingly competing on AI-powered research, contract analysis, and workflow automation.

What We Haven’t Verified

LinkedIn follower count (396K) is for the LexisNexis company page on LinkedIn, which is the legal technology division of RELX. The parent company RELX has a separate, larger page. The 396K figure reflects the legal-focused entity.

Closd

Closd is a French-founded legal transaction management platform designed to take a corporate deal from document preparation through closing and post-closing, replacing the email-Word-spreadsheet workflow that most transactional lawyers still suffer through. Acquired by LexisNexis in December 2021, Closd now operates under the LexisNexis umbrella but maintains its own product brand and development team. Core capabilities: deal project management with task tracking and conditions precedent monitoring, integrated data room for due diligence (VDR), digital closing (including remote signing ceremonies with qualified electronic signatures under eIDAS), automated closing binder generation, and audit trail for all deal activity. Created by former lawyers in Paris (2018). Strong European presence — particularly French, German, and UK market. AES-256 encryption, 2FA, SSO. Capterra listing active. YouTube channel with product demos, case study webinars, and feature walkthroughs. Lexidia law firm testimonial: ‘We were immediately convinced of the usefulness and time-saving potential of Closd — we open a project on Closd as soon as a transaction starts.’ Competitor to Legatics (UK), Litera Transact, DealCloser, and Closing Folders. The LexisNexis acquisition gives Closd credibility and distribution but also means it’s now part of the RELX conglomerate — raising questions about product independence and roadmap control vs LexisNexis’s broader strategy.

Lexisnexis Intellectual Property Solutions

LexisNexis Intellectual Property Solutions is the RELX-owned IP analytics and search business unit that packages several mature products under one umbrella: PatentSight+ for portfolio benchmarking and competitive intelligence, PatentAdvisor for prosecution analytics, and TotalPatent One for global patent search. The evidence is strongest for three practitioner jobs. First, patent teams use TotalPatent One when global prior-art searching across multiple authorities is too slow and fragmented. Second, prosecution teams use PatentAdvisor when office-action strategy cannot rely on gut feel about an examiner, tech center, or appeal path. Third, in-house IP leaders and outside counsel use PatentSight when they need to benchmark portfolio quality, defend board-level strategy, or pressure-test an acquisition target’s patents before a go/no-go decision. The market signal is real but niche: Law-firm case studies for Han Santos and McBee Moore & Vanik, patent-law Reddit mentions for PatentAdvisor and TotalPatent One, and persistent industry coverage in IAM and other IP-specific channels. The tradeoff is that pricing and security are only partially transparent at the umbrella-brand level. TotalPatent One has a public per-search schedule, but PatentSight and PatentAdvisor appear demo-led. I did not find a public product trust center or customer-facing certification page for the suite.
