What it is
What It Does
Aderant builds practice and financial management software for large law firms. Its flagship product, Aderant Expert, handles time capture, billing, and financial management — the back-office systems that big firms run on. The product line extends into matter management, business intelligence, conflicts checking, docketing, and, more recently, AI-driven pricing and profitability tools (Aderant acquired Virtual Pricing Director to add that capability).
The company sits at the high end of the market, competing directly with Thomson Reuters Elite 3E for firm-management deployments at the largest firms. It is not a tool for solos or small firms — the implementation and cost profile target the AmLaw and Global 100 tier.
Aderant was founded in 1978 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It was acquired by Roper Technologies (Nasdaq 100, S&P 500) from private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners in October 2015, and now operates as a Roper subsidiary.
Who It’s For
BigLaw / large firms (200+) — This is the target market. Firms migrating off legacy financial systems or switching from Elite 3E are Aderant’s core buyers. The depth in time, billing, and financial reporting fits firms with complex matter structures and high transaction volume.
Mid-size firms — Possible, but the cost and implementation overhead are heavy. Smaller firms typically look at Clio, CARET, or Centerbase instead.
Solo / small firms — Not the target. The complexity and price put this out of reach for small practices.
What We Found
Aderant states it supports nearly 3,200 clients across more than 30 countries, including 77 of the top 100 Global Law Firms and more than 88% of the AmLaw 200 (vendor figures cited at the time of the Roper acquisition). The company describes itself as the largest independent legal software company, a claim that predates the Roper deal.
On G2, Aderant products hold a 4.1/5 rating across 115 reviews. Reviewers consistently praise Expert’s depth for time capture and billing, while flagging a steep learning curve — in a head-to-head comparison, G2 users scored Aderant Expert 7.2 for ease of use against Clio’s 9.0. That trade-off is typical of enterprise firm-management software: more capability, more complexity. High-profile firm migrations to Aderant Expert (including Holland & Knight moving off Elite) have been reported in legal-tech press.
What We Haven’t Verified
- Client-count and market-share figures (3,200 clients, 77 of Global 100, 88% of AmLaw 200) — vendor-sourced, cited around the 2015 Roper acquisition; not independently confirmed for 2026
- Pricing — not published; enterprise sales and demo required
- Depth of the integrations listed in product directories (several are vendor-claimed, not tested)
- AI pricing and profitability features following the Virtual Pricing Director acquisition — capability not independently assessed
